Passages

Steel
10' x 23' x 23'

Passages is in the permanent collection of the Nathan Sculpture Park at Governors State University in Illinois. This piece is made of two walls built of 216 pieces of 10 footlong 4x4 inch steel tubing. The walls are arranged in two double spirals interlocking each other to form passageways to an interior space, a publicly private space. The "golden" spiral is a naturally reoccurring form in nature, like the pattern of a sea shell or water flowing down a hole. As the viewer moves through the space they are placing themselves both in a natural pattern of movement and an architectural space which creates a semi-transparent barrier between an interior and exterior space. It is a piece that can only be seen through experience.
