Lead to Life

The King Center
Atlanta, GA
April 6, 2018

This project was a collaboration with Lead to Life in which guns collected from city buy back programs were melted and cast into shovels. The shovels were then used for ceremonial tree planting. This event, as well a series of other events, was conducted in honor of the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s Assassination. The preliminary iron pour took place on April 4th at 7:01pm when Reverend Bernice King rang the bell to mark the time of the assassination. She delivered a ceremonial gun to the furnace and iron was cast. The iron pour continued on Friday, April 6th. The event emphasized iron casting as a transformative process.  The desire to melt guns into shovel handles began as an emotional transformation, but iron casting allowed it to be visual and ultimately produced tangible evidence of the effort that went into the event.
